When I have peace of mind to appreciate my genuine loved ones; that I am loved; and living a good life, within my means; this is what freedom means to me.

For example, I am grateful for my immediate biological family, children of my mother, their spouses and their children, each and everyone of them are the wind beneath my wind. They are there for me, no questions asked.

And because they are there for me I feel I have freedom to imagine and to do what most are not able to, for they lack a peace of mind that comes from knowing you have a solid support system.

Since, today is mother’s day, let me zero in on the mothers in my life. Starting with my big sister, Pamela. Especially so, since our papa died in 2020, Pamela stepped up and has been like a mother to us her younger siblings.

My mum, at her tender age of late 70s (wink, wink) soon to enter the 80s, but strong as though she were in her 50s. When her husband, our papa died,in 2020 she stepped up double-double for us her children.

She is doing so, while at the same time carrying an immense burden of attacks directed at her. The plight of many widows in Uganda, is a story yet to be told fully and genuinely.

Mum is a super mum. Her fellow residents pleaded with her, their “Mama Watoto,” to return back into active politics and to be the Chairperson of her village.

When she told me about it, I worried that she would have to spend loads of her money for nothing. And I told her to take care not to be fleeced.

I need not have worried! Judging from her ‘winning campaign poster’ seemingly done last minute; and the fact that she was nominated unopposed.

Seriously, contextualize her campaign poster in the fact that she has children who are the best in the creatives industry and you will appreciate why we, her children, are rolling over laughing, but are totally proud of her.

To my brothers, I am grateful to my sisters-in-love who are doing a great job nurturing your families and therefore my family. When you have peace of mind in your homes because of them I am happy and we are all happy.

May you be with peace of mind, living within your means and busking in the love showered you by your loved ones.

Freedom comes with and is sustained by peace of mind.
