For some reason today’s daily writing prompt reminded me of the line from “Downton Abbey,” so eloquently delivered by “Dowager Countess, Violet Crawley”:
“What is a weekend?“
It made be laugh again, as I have done often re-watching the drama series n times. It remains one of my favorites of all time!
Interestingly, yesterday evening I listened into an X-Space of lawyers and advocates in which the guest, the President of the Uganda Law Society, Isaac Ssemakadde, used an analytical framework of “class” or “classes” to make a point.
“Do lazy days make you feel rested or unproductive?”
Truly, I think, the answer to this question depends on which class one belongs. Also the more we get ‘digitalized’ the lines between work and leisure are increasingly blurred, me thinks.
For many of us, the COVID-19 pandemic re-enforced the culture of home offices or working at home or working remotely. I think it has gotten harder to have and or to distinguish which days are our ‘lazy days’ that are purposed for rest.
I feel like, these days, I am more like the ‘downstairs’ occupants of “Downton Abbey” – the workers serving the upper class. It is feasible, like them, at most I get only a half-day of lazing around per week, if I am lucky.
In which case, my half-day comes about when my body rebels and I must lay down my tools and get some rest. So I answer in the affirmative, the times I get lazy half days, they make me feel rested and rejuvenated.
Come to think of it, they are an necessity in order for me to continue to be productive.
