I have strong feelings about eating meat.

As in I am a socialized and nurtured meat eater.

My childhood memories are of eating own meat not bought from the butcher. I remember how for the generation of my grandparents, as well as my parents, the predominant manner of accessing meat was through rearing of own domestic animals.

These days, however, in the advent of ‘modernization’, it seems, has caused the majority of us to buy meat that we eat from a butcher. We are no longer in control of our meat food system from farm to plate.

And because of that, commercialization of meat, buying it to eat, meat is no longer affordable to all. Hence, in my part of the world eating meat is now a status symbol.

Ones wealth status is judged by one’s ability to afford meat for one’s family to eat. To the extent that the frequency one eats meat; and the quantity of meat one eats, is used by the Uganda National Bureau of Statistics to determines one’s wealth and or poverty level.
