Richest country in the East African Community

Burundi, with the second highest population density within the East African Community (EAC), of about 457 people per square kilometre, is the poorest country in the EAC; in Africa; and in the whole world. It has a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of US$ 308 (about Ug. 1.2 million).

Kenya, with the fourth lowest population density in EAC of about 97 people per square kilometre, has a GDP per capita of US$ 2,259 (about Ug. Shs. 8.5 million), is ranked second wealthiest country in the EAC and the 21st wealthiest in Africa.

Tanzania, with the third lowest population density in EAC of about 67 people per square kilometre, has a GDP per capita of US$ 1,341 (about Ug. Shs. 5.1 million), is ranked third wealthiest in the EAC and the 28th in Africa.

Uganda, with the third highest population density in EAC of about 203 people per square kilometre, has a GDP per capita of US$ 1,164 (about Ug. Shs. 4.4 million), is ranked fourth wealthiest in EAC and the 32nd in Africa.

Rwanda, with the highest population density in EAC of about 520 people per square kilometre, has a GDP per capita of US$ 968 (about Ug. Shs. 3.7 million), is ranked fifth wealthiest in EAC and the 34th in Africa.

South Sudan, with the lowest population density in EAC of about 18 people per square kilometre, has a GDP per capita of US$ 570 (about Ug. Shs. 2.2 million), is ranked sixth wealthiest in EAC and the 46th in Africa.

Democratic Republic of Congo, with the second lowest population density in EAC of about 41 people per square kilometre and whose GDP per capita is US$ 2,844 (about Ug. Shs. 10.7 million), is the wealthiest country in the EAC and is ranked the 15th wealthiest in Africa.

For comparison with the rest of Africa, Seychelles, which has a GDP per capita of US$ 21,321 (about Ug. Shs. 80.3 million), more than double the combined GDP per capita for all the seven EAC countries, is the wealthiest country in Africa; and is ranked 52nd wealthiest country in the world.

The wealthiest country in the world is Luxembourg, with a GDP per capita of US$ 128,820 – more than six times that of Seychelles.
