List your top 5 grocery store items.

In good times, including when my big sister, Pamela owe London, has gifted me survival money, I stock up and my top 5 grocery store items will likely be:

Groceries

  • Coffee – I like to tryout different types and brands and so each time I may get a different type and or brand and quantity.
  • Fruits – usually sweet bananas, sukali ndizi, will be among.
  • Snacks
  • Vegetables
  • Toiletries

For my other food shopping, like potatoes, cooking bananas, cassava, etc, I buy them at the farmers markets fresh each time I would like to cook them.

Then I also have foods, such as avocado, passion fruits, onions, garlic, amaranth, ginger, mint, lemon grass, etc. growing in my front yard garden and so I do not have to buy them. I harvest when needed. When mine are off-season and I need spices, my favorite shop to buy from is Spicy Duuka (featured photo).

Increasingly, this year, I have appreciated how those whose food and nutrition security are dependent on buying food can be food insecure. It is tough when you are unable to buy food and you do not know where you next cash for food is going to come from.

It is a reason why, I am taking keen interest in food systems transformation conversations.
