Hands down, he who qualifies to be among those categorized as “a man who has positively impacted my life,” is he who brands himself as the “East Africa Rule of Law Champion”, Lawyer Male Mabirizi.

Mr. Mabirizi is unbending in his loyalty to the letter and the spirit of the law. In word and action, he renders us all a public service, one neglected by the public institutions with the mandate to do so.

Mr. Mabirizi aptly observes, for example, the “Uganda Law Society (ULS) is so weak. What is it doing to promote rule of law.” Indeed, there is a gaping huge gap in the legal activities of the ULS, specifically in ensuring and assuring good quality legislation prevails and in the interest of the commons.

Mr. Mabirizi takes on public interest litigation, irrespective of who it is he determines a violator of the law of the land. He has normalized taking on significant and powerful persons and institutions.

  • “Male Mabirizi Versus Attorney General” on matters regarding the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF), for example.
  • “Male Mabirizi Versus Kabaka (King) of Buganda on governance issues, including land administration, for example.

Mr. Mabirizi seems a lone wolf, so to speak, unrelenting in taking on the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and insisting it does its work. Regularly petitioning the JSC on matters misconduct of judicial officers, including Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo, who currently holds the highest judicial office of the land.

Mr. Mabirizi makes it his business to follow and freely offer public advisories on legal cases with public interest dimensions. He does so in a manner that truly educates and nurtures human development; consequently, civic duty. He does so openly, transparently and in a relatable manner.

Mr. Mabirizi each day shares images and short videos on social media, in which he offers commentary on on-going legal matters, offering his opinion on how judicial officers may or may not legally apply the the law. Including advice to advocates considered “senior” in experience and education.

Mr. Mabirizi, unlike most lawyers, has prioritized his source of income to be from donations from the public – including small individual donations, which I presume form the majority source of his income to cover legal expenses that he incurs.

Mr. Mabirizi’s crowd fundraising is an effective tool that validates his service to country. He can only successfully be given donations if people truly feel and benefit from the positive impact of his work. I attest that the work he is doing is truly important and positively impacting on a wide scale.
