On St. Janani Luwum Day, commemorated on 16th February, it is valid to reflect and ask if we, Ugandans, are truly worthy of this particular public holiday and what it represents.

Contextualize within the iconic images of the torture scars of Kakwenza Rukirabashaija, are we worthy of St. Janani Luwum Day?

May the spirit of St. Janani Luwum take hold of us, I pray.

May the injustices St. Luwum was murdered for speaking out and up against become history in our motherland, I pray.

As a nation we should not be proud that those who should be receiving and taking over the mantle of the leadership are fleeing into exile in fear for their lives.

May we find the wisdom to be truly patriotic and be unbending in our loyalty to the truth, I pray.

Four years later, this post first published on 16th February 2022 remains the more valid. Particularly so, in light of the aftermath of the 2026 general election campaigns, voting day and declaration of results.
