“NEW YORK – Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani today (19th September 2026) announced that the installation of 17 new public bathrooms has begun across New York City, bringing free, accessible facilities to public plazas and high-traffic areas where New Yorkers currently lack reliable access to a bathroom (source: NYC Office of the Mayor).”
It reminds me of my post, “Non-Implementation of Public Health Policy,” in which I lamented the lack there of or the insufficient provision of public toilets in Uganda. A post I authored in September 2017.
Nearly a decade later, even though things have improved somewhat, it could be argued, the status quo in Uganda today continues to validate my concerns of the negative impact of insufficient provision of public toilets. sadly.
How ironic that he who was born in Kampala in Uganda, albeit not of Ugandan parentage and not Ugandan, but still born in Uganda, and in his capacity as a Mayo, is causing installation of public toilets for the greater good of the public.
What will it take for similar to happen in Uganda, where public toilets are much needed?
By the way, lack of access to toilets is a huge public health challenge, not only in the provision of public toilets, but in overall access to safe toilets. Only 19 percent of Ugandans have access to safe toilets (source: Monitor)
And according to Monitor, “the Ministry of Health estimates that poor sanitation costs Uganda billions of shillings each year in health care expenses.”
What will it take for Uganda to get our priorities right?
It Uganda truly without human resources of the caliber of Mayor Mamdani?
If it be the case that Uganda is without the requisite human resources, why is it the case?
If human resources are not the problem, what is?
Many questions I have, that need investigation and answer got for the greater good.
