The first time I heard the concept, “Value Addition”, spoken, in non-governmental organisation (NGO)-speak, I came away thinking it was something inaccessible. Way out there and not for the ordinary person.
I have since appreciated that value addition is diverse and many options are pretty much simple and accessible.
Sun drying is an age-old tradition of our ancestors. Drying food items for preservation for months that ensures all year round food and nutrition security in the home.
That is why #WithLoveMeghan resonates with me. The Duchess shared tips on value addition that are accessible.
And, what a joy it is to do value addition on and with one’s own harvest. Being in control from farm to cup, in this case, ginger.
Ginger freshly harvested from my front yard garden and washed
Cut the fresh ginger into smaller pieces, pounded with a mortar, and put out to dry under the sun.
When it is dry, grind using a blender. Simple as that you have new stock in a re-usable glass jar. Saving on expenditure for food, while at the same time having high value nutritious food and a great achievement.
Food and nutrition security are within our means.
