What aspects of your cultural heritage are you most proud of or interested in?
There are certain words and ways of saying in our language, Ateso, of the fifth largest first nation of Uganda, that when translated into English loose their weight. Without knowing Ateso, I wouldn’t be able to appreciate our culture.
Am so proud of Ateso to the extent that when am branding my products, I base my brand names on Ateso words. Read more on “Branding in Ateso, the case of my Atorot Brand.”
It is through Ateso that I am able to truly appreciate the ways of our ancestors. Sadly, however, Ateso is among languages that is fast disappearing and more and more Iteso abandon speaking it and also abandon the ways of our ancestors. I love Iteso cuisine. Especially food preservation methods that enabled our ancestors to have food reserves for all year food sovereignty. They were able to grow, hunt, forage for their own food and be sufficient without needing food aid and handouts. Sadly, this aspect of our culture, our food, is disappearing.
